A Tribute to Dr. Susan Mills

Dr. Susan Mills, a faculty member of Widener University, suddenly passed away on November 4th, 2018. Dr. Mills was a past president of Eta Beta, and was currently serving on the board as secretary. The Widener University community and Eta Beta continue to mourn her loss. Dr. Mills was loved by her faculty colleagues and all of her students. Dr. Mills had more than two decades of experience in Pediatric nursing and continued her love for teaching pediatrics to Widener students. Thank you Dr. Mills for all of you have done. You will live on in our hearts forever.

    Eta Beta Scholarship Symposium 2024

    Friday, April 12, 2024

    CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

    Abstracts related to research, evidence-based practice, or quality improvement projects for nursing practice, administration, or education are sought for podium and poster presentations. Podium presentations must be completed research or projects; posters may be either completed research/projects or works in progress.

    Eta Beta or Sigma membership is not required to submit. Submissions are open to all, and we welcome submissions from students, alumni, and faculty.

    Submissions must include:

    • Abstract (250 words or less) must include the following headings: Background/Purpose, Theoretical Framework/Evidence-Based Practice Model/Quality Improvement Process Model, Methods, Results, Conclusions/Implications

    • Short, one paragraph speaker introduction

    • Two learning objectives

    • Preference for podium, poster, or either presentation

    Eta Beta Research Day was a huge success! Thanks to Dr. Hilary Barnes for coordinating this event. Podium and poster presentations from faculty and students were excellent!

  • Eta Beta Research Grants

    ETA Beta Research Grant Awards

    Description:

    Eta Beta is pleased to offer a grant to support the research endeavors of its members. The purpose of Eta Beta research grants is to encourage qualified nurses to contribute to the advancement of nursing through scholarly activities.

    · Annually, Eta Beta will award individual grants in the amount of up to $1,000.

    o Depending on the number of applications received, the budgets of the applications received, and the merit of the applications received, this award may be divided up among 3-5 applicants

    · Applications will be blindly reviewed by current Eta Beta Board members. The review is based on the extent to which the application meets the following criteria:

    o the overall application meets the format of the application criteria

    o the research question responds to an important gap in knowledge.

    o it is likely that the proposed methods will address the research question(s).

    o the methods are appropriate, substantiated, and rigorous

    o the project is accomplishable in the stated timeframe with the resources available/described

    Note: Eta Beta board members will recuse themselves from application reviews if they have applied for this grant.

    Requirements:

    · Applicants must be current members of Eta Beta

    · Applicants must submit the Grant Award Agreement (p. 2).

    · Applicants must submit the research proposal of no more than 5 pages (appendices and references not included) that addresses the components of the Grant Application Criteria listed below (p. 3).

    · Applicants must report additional monetary funding received for this research.

    · If approval has not been received at this time, note the date and to whom it was submitted. Funds will not be dispersed until proof of IRB approval has been submitted.

    · Applicants must submit all components of the application in a PDF format in one file only.

    · Please e-mail your cover letter (with Eta Beta status), CV, proposal, Eta Beta grant award agreement and other documents (IRB approval, educational materials, budget etc.) as a PDF attachment to: Monica F. Rochman, PhD,RN mfrochman@widener.edu

  • Student Ambassador Application

    We are looking for Student Ambassadors!

    The Student Membership Ambassador is a representative at the chapter level that serves as a liaison between student members and the Eta Beta Chapter. The ambassador should strive to strengthen the connection with new and future inductees to create welcoming environment, to orient and to inform this membership segment about STTI and Eta Beta Chapter.

     

    Requirements

     

    • Active new student inductees that dues-paying members of the chapter
    • Able to serve a two-year term (senior year and one year after graduation)
    • Able to participate in Eta Beta activities (leadership meetings, scholarship programs)

     

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as liaison between newly-inducted and future student members and the chapter, regional, international levels of STTI.
    • Introduce future inductees to STTI and Eta Beta Chapter activities and benefits of
    • Use Eta Beta's social media presence to engage and inform newly-inducted and future student
    • Participate in leadership succession activities by shadowing chapter leaders, participating in board meetings or conference calls, and collaborating with the member involvement
    • Survey new student membersor candidatesto fosterdiscussionsto discoverand understandtheir needs.

    Benefits

    • Annual membership dues for the second year of membership will be paid by the
    • Registration fees for Eta Beta's Spring Dinner 2023/2024 will be paid by the
    • Registration fees for the Tri-State Consortium Program in 2023/2024 will be paid by the

    Application Process

    • A 500-word essay describing your leadership and communication skills as well as your vision for fulfilling the above responsibilities is required.
    • Two applicants will be chosen by the Eta Beta Board of Directors at January Board meeting.
    • Student Ambassadors will serve a two-year term starting on January 15, 2023 and ending on December 31, 2024.

    The purpose of Eta Beta research grants is to encourage qualified nurses to contribute to the advancement of nursing through research.

      

    Applicant Criteria/Fund Allocation

     

    • Masters prepared registered nurse or enrolled in graduate study with a current license.
    • Must be an active Eta Beta chapter member.
    • A committee of Eta Beta board members, who presents to the full board for approval, blindly reviews applications.
    • The funds requested, the number of grants awarded, and the amount of funds available determine each grant allocation. There is a maximum of $1500 per award.


    Application Guidelines and Attachments

    Each application should include a cover letter stipulating Eta Beta membership status, curriculum vitae of investigator(s), the proposed study and any other pertinent documents. Proposal Guidelines: No more than 5 pages. Copies of instruments must be attached. Human Subjects approval must be submitted. If approval has not been received at this time, note the date and to whom it was submitted. Funds will not be dispersed until proof of IRB approval has been submitted.

    • Specific aims/hypotheses
    • Background/significance
    • Methods: research design, sample, measures/instruments, procedures, plan for data analysis, plan for human subjects approval.
    • References, specific budget, timeline
    • Additional monetary support received for the project


    By accepting the grant funds, you agree to the following:

    • Present findings at an Eta Beta program following completion of the study (dinner meeting or research day)
    • Provide a report at the completion of the study on expenditures, enrollment, and plans for dissemination of the results. Return any unused funds.
    • Return all funds if IRB approval is not obtained.
    • Provide an abstract of the study results for publication on the Eta Beta web site.
